Cautionary advice regarding Dyslexia diagnosis for secondary and tertiary students:
If you are wanting a Dyslexia diagnosis for the purpose of accessing funding for assistive technology or for funding for additional support or Special Assessment Conditions (SAC) for NZCEA exams at secondary or tertiary education level, we recommended that you inquire with the relevant institution / funding agency to confirm whether or not they require assessment and diagnosis by a Level C Assessor. Here's why:
In the past, the criteria for a Dyslexia diagnosis included requirements for a deficit in cognitive processing skills and an ability - achievement gap. These criteria were found to be invalid and were thrown out in 2006. Unfortunately, funding agencies tend to still require that a Dyslexia diagnosis must be made by an Educational Psychologist or other NZCER Level C Assessor based on these outdated and invalid criteria. (We have raised this inequity issue with the Learning Disability Association of New Zealand / LDANZ.)
To sum up: Speechie has NZCER Level B Assessor status, NOT Level C. While administration of an individual achievement test is within the ethics and scope of our practice, the fact currently remains that a Dyslexia diagnosis made by us may not be accepted for the reasons presented here.

Do we get locked into a subscription?
Not at all! The point of Dignity is not to have cupboards full of tampons in the office, we want the initiative to be as useful as possible so re-ordering is up to you. We are happy to do monthly, three monthly or what ever works for you or your business.
Do we have to be public with our partnership with Speechie?
We’d love you to be a proud, public Speechie partner, and we understand there might be reasons why you would like to be anonymous. We provide a staff survey after Dignity is implemented at a company for a month to let you know what the initiative is being received so far and will help to see if you want to continue to support us.
Will ask what they get to have as a benefit in the workplace too?
Not really! Most men understand the impact of periods upon cis-women from experiences with their partners, daughters and friends. We haven’t received backlash or feedback about this topic to date which is awesome.
Will the product just get taken from the bathroom?
When you start the Dignity initiative at your workplace the most important part of the process is communicating this to your staff and letting them know why you’ve started this initiative. We’ve made a handy paragraph to help with this and to put out in your internal communications. The only time a Dignity canister has been taken from the bathroom was when it was accessible to the public.
Does Speechie make a profit from?offer reusable period products like menstrual cups as part of their initiative?
Absolutely not! All funds received via our Gift and Gift Matching Initiatives go directly to providing subsidised and free services for children. We will report on contributions received and subsidised and free services delivered on our Impact Page and in our quarterly public impact report.
How does Speechie choose the beneficiaries that receive subsidised or free services?
We have schools that reach out to us through our networks or website to sign up to receive the Dignity give one product, if there is a need at the school or community groups, regardless of decile or city, we give according to what the need is. You can read more about the groups we support on our Impact page and on our Public Impact report.
Everyone experiences their periods differently but no one should experience it alone. Talking about your experiences, the products you use and educating people breaks the stigma around periods.
We want to encourage an open and honest conversation so we developed some conversation starters. Stand with Dignity. 🙌
