Screenings for Children

The purpose of a screening is to determine whether a child’s performance in a particular skill area is significantly different from same-age peers and serious enough to justify the cost of further assessment.

Children are complex beings, and when they are having difficulty with talking, understanding  listening, reading, writing, spelling, learning or making friends, there may be several different things going on.  We use a variety of screenings to help us identify the nature of a child's difficulties.

Please note that some screenings are completed by the Speech-Language Therapist directly with the child, while others are completed by parents and / or teachers using standardised checklists about the child’s skills and behaviours.
Everyday Communication Screening $75
Ages 18 months to 16 years
This is an internationally gold standard and comprehensive screening of speech, language and communication and identifies children with clinically significant communication difficulties who would benefit from further assessment.  This This screening is suitable for children who are experiencing any kind of verbal language or language comprehension difficulties.  It consists of a parent rating scale about the child's every day speech, language and communication behaviours and takes about 20 minutes to complete.  The rating scale will be sent via NZ Post along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope for returning it to us.  The Speech-Language Therapist will then analyse screening results and send you a formal screening report.

Executive Functions Screening $100
Ages 5 to 18
This is an internationally gold standard and comprehensive screening of behaviour, emotion, and cognitive regulation skills which underpin a child's learning, including attention, and problem-solving skills.  This screening is useful for identifying underlying skill deficits in children who are experiencing problems with listening, literacy, learning, or behaviour.  It consists of 3 rating scales about the child's behaviour habits including a parent, teacher and child (ages 11+) rating scale that takes about 15 minutes to complete.  The Speech-Language Therapist will analyse screening results and send you a formal screening report.  (The Parent Form of this screening will be sent via NZ Post along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope for returning it to us.  The Child's Teacher will be sent an email initiation to complete the Teacher Form online.  Children may compel a Self-Report Form in the presence of the Speech-Language Therapist.)

Hearing Screening $35
Ages 3 to 12
The purpose of this screening is to rule out hearing loss as the basis for a child's communication difficulties.   It is suitable for children who are able to follow instructions and sit and focus for at least 5 minutes.  We refer any children who fail this screening directly to the DHB audiology department for a comprehensive hearing assessment.   The child must come to our Centre in Palmerston North for this screening.  The Speech-Language Therapist will administer this screening.  You will receive a screening report at the end of the screening test.
